Frequently Asked Questions

“I’ve never talked to anyone before. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?”

Not at all. Reaching out for support takes courage, self-awareness, and strength. Many people are used to carrying everything on their own for a long time before seeking help. At Encompass, we believe therapy is not about weakness — it’s about having a safe place to process life’s challenges, better understand yourself, and build tools to move forward. We work alongside you to help identify your strengths, increase resilience, and reduce the impact of the struggles you may be facing.

“What’s the difference between talking to a therapist versus a friend or family member?”

Support from friends and family can be valuable, but therapy offers something different. A trained mental health professional provides an objective, nonjudgmental space focused entirely on you and your goals. We help you learn practical coping skills, recognize patterns, gain new perspectives, and process emotions in a healthy and confidential environment. Therapy also allows you to speak openly without worrying about burdening loved ones or feeling pressure to protect others’ feelings.

“Why shouldn’t I just take medication?”

Medication can be very helpful for some people, and in some situations it may be an important part of treatment. However, medication alone often does not address the underlying stressors, patterns, relationships, emotions, or life experiences contributing to the problem. Therapy helps you better understand yourself, develop coping strategies, improve relationships, and create meaningful change. For many people, counseling and medication together can be an effective combination.

“How does therapy work? What do I have to do in sessions?”

Therapy looks a little different for everyone because every person’s story, goals, and needs are unique. At Encompass, we tailor our approach to each individual. Sessions may involve talking through current stressors, learning coping tools, exploring patterns, practicing communication skills, processing emotions, or working toward specific goals. You do not need to have everything figured out before starting — we meet you where you are.

“How long will therapy take?”

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The length of therapy depends on many factors, including your goals, current stressors, past experiences, support systems, and the changes you hope to make. Some people come for short-term support around a specific issue, while others benefit from longer-term therapy focused on deeper growth and healing. We work collaboratively with you throughout the process and adjust as your needs evolve.

“I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?”

Your willingness to show up honestly and consistently is one of the most important parts of the process. Growth takes time, openness, and practice. Between sessions, it can help to reflect on what was discussed, practice new coping skills, notice patterns, and communicate openly about what is or is not helping. Therapy works best when it is a collaborative process, and we are here to support you every step of the way.
